One of the challenges I had when I was having so many health problems was the issue of brain fog. Have you experienced brain fog? I recall it actually scared me when I experienced it for the first time.
I was at work, sat down at my desk to type out a simple report. I remember staring at the computer and wondering why can’t I write this simple report. I could not even string a sentence together. I could not formulate what I wanted to say. And I remember distinctly thinking how very strange that my brain was not working. I kept telling myself to snap out of it and just write the darn report – something that normally was easy for me to do. I eventually persevered, wrote it and gosh only knows if it made any sense.
I have to admit it was scary. It was just another issue in a long list of health concerns I was experiencing and frankly ignoring.
So what is brain fog exactly? Well it is actual a symptom – like insomnia – that something else is happening in the body. It is a type of cognitive dysfunction that affects your memory and the inability to focus or concentrate. You really do feel like you are in a fog, there is no clarity of thought. I was not able to focus completely – like a wondering mind going nowhere.
There can be many reasons you might experience brain fog such as insomnia, stress, hormones out of balance especially during menopause, your diet is too high in sugar or perhaps a food sensitivity, certain medication or a medical condition such as hypothyroidism, diabetes and more.
Well that explained it – I had insomnia, stress, menopause, a diet high in sugar and I had hypothyroidism. At the time I did not know what to do, did my best to ignore it and I struggled through a lot more health issues for a couple of more years before I finally had enough and started working on bringing my body back into balance, and getting to live again with energy and passion.
Turning my health around – by getting to sleep, learning to destress, cleaning up my diet, balancing my hormones gave me a new sense of purpose. It was so impactful that I went back to school and started studying nutrition. I even studied some science courses like chemistry and biology – something totally unthinkable if I still had brain fog! My thinking capacity today far exceeds where I was 15 years ago.
